This certification is a “must have” for any cruiser who leaves sight of land, especially when heading to another continent. Yes, there are global satellite telephones out there now, but these are still expensive to use, do not offer coverage in some parts of the world, can be intermittent depending on satellites having to be overhead, and don’t offer all the features of the ham and SSB system. Once certified, the user can talk for unlimited amounts, receive weather faxes, hook up their laptop, and subscribe to radio-based e-mail.  This is the entry level certification which allows the holder to use ham radio only on certain designated bands, not the full spectrum of ham radio frequencies. Nor does the user learn to build and repair ham radios as in the advanced course. Morse Code is not a requirement at this level. This course is ideal for yacht users who just want to be able to conduct conversations and stay in touch with land stations or other cruisers anywhere else on the globe.

This course initiated by Blue Water Cruising Association, Calgary Fleet.  Their Training Co-Ordinator, Dal Bryant, may be contacted at (403) 874-1195 0r This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
