Bounty Placed on Lion Fish Gobbling Up all Fish Life

lion-fish_01

Been snorkeling under your boat lately in the Caribbean and didn't see many fish?  Well, it's very likley due to the invasion of Lion Fish, those feathery predators originally from SE Asia.  There was an aquarium in Florida that lost a handful of these ichy critters in a hurricane not too long ago.  They've since multiplied more than prolifically and a become a very serious threat to all fish life.

If touched by a human, it's dorsal fins can deliver a venomous poison.  The wound can cause a troublesome painful sting, with nausea and breathing difficulties, but is seldom fatal.

A bounty has been placed on the Lion Fish's head, but they're hard to catch.  The average payout seems to be about $50 per fish.  See local authorities for details.

Check out more on them at the Discovery Channel's web site at http://dsc.discovery.com/news/2008/08/13/red-lionfish-caribbean.html.

Panama Canal Soon to Have Third Canal.

Yachters, yes it's true.  The Panama Canal is being expanded!  Less waiting time to get through the trench!  The two existing parallel canals will soon have an agjacent third, wider waterway, construction for which is already under way.  It will sport doors which will be drawn at a right angle into the wall beside the canal, rather than two swing-away gates.  Said to be more efficient with the use of water from Gatun Lake, it will still max out the capacity of that man made reservoir to supply water for lock operation.  See more on this on Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panama_Canal_expansion_project.

Participate and Help Save Canadian Lives this Summer

In partnership with Transport Canada, the CPS 2010 Canadian Safe Boating Awareness Week will take place from Coast to Coast to Coast in Canada from May 29 to June 4, 2010. Click HERE for Public Service Announcement on CPS 2010 Safe Boating Week.

Canada's leader in training for the recreational boater, the Canadian Power & Sail Squadrons (CPS), is a non-profit organization formed in 1938 with over 42,000 members across the country, and is presenting this initiative in conjunction with its industry partners, to promote and encourage safe boating practices to all Canadians.

To assist you in securing the media's involvement and support, CPS will post special news releases and other valuable information on its website (www.cpsboat.ca). This will include content for radio, press and television media as provided by our partners in safe boating.

The purpose of this initiative is to ensure that all Canadians who head out on the waters in canoes, kayaks, sailboards, sailboats, fishing boats, personal watercraft, power boats, cruisers and houseboats are equipped with the knowledge required to have a safe day on the water.

CPS has a long history of providing the best education for the boating public. The presentation of the CPS 2010 Canadian Safe Boating Awareness Week* is our opportunity to reach the public and bring them into our classrooms.

Let's do our part to make this week a success - for the recreational boating public and CPS.

Plan now - May 29 to June 4, 2010 will be here soon!

Stock Your Vessel With CPS Life Jackets

In June 2009, CPS-ECP signed a Memorandum of Agreement with Salus Marine, a Canadian manufacturer of lifejackets.  Salus has received several awards including one from the Canadian Safe Boating Council for the introduction of lifejackets suitable for infants.  CPS-ECP acquired lifejackets from Salus for the CPS-ECP Recreational Vessel Courtesy Check (RVCC) program, carried out through the summer of 2009.

The standard gold lifejacket, without pockets, and with the CPS-ECP logo on both front and back can be purchased directly through Ships Store for $76.00 each plus tax and shipping charges, a 15% savings off the regular retail price.  These are the ones that have been displayed by Ships Store at both National Training and Governing Board meetings held in March at the Delta Airport Hotel in Toronto and also featured under Ships Store on the CPS-ECP website, complete with a dropdown sizing chart.

Information on other Salus lifejackets, including custom orders, is available by contacting Ships Store directly and the catalogue can be viewed on the Salus website, www.salusmarine.com. Salus President Steve Wagner is offering all lifejackets at 15% off the retail price to CPS-ECP members, plus applicable taxes and shipping.

Shipping costs for anywhere in Canada will be $7.00 for one lifejacket and $10.00 for two or more.

If you have any questions or concerns and/or are interested in placing an order, please contact Lynda Green directly from Ships Store at 1-800-CPS-BOAT.
