Bounty Placed on Lion Fish Gobbling Up all Fish Life
Been snorkeling under your boat lately in the Caribbean and didn't see many fish? Well, it's very likley due to the invasion of Lion Fish, those feathery predators originally from SE Asia. There was an aquarium in Florida that lost a handful of these ichy critters in a hurricane not too long ago. They've since multiplied more than prolifically and a become a very serious threat to all fish life. If touched by a human, it's dorsal fins can deliver a venomous poison. The wound can cause a troublesome painful sting, with nausea and breathing difficulties, but is seldom fatal. A bounty has been placed on the Lion Fish's head, but they're hard to catch. The average payout seems to be about $50 per fish. See local authorities for details. Check out more on them at the Discovery Channel's web site at http://dsc.discovery.com/news/2008/08/13/red-lionfish-caribbean.html.
Panama Canal Soon to Have Third Canal.
Yachters, yes it's true. The Panama Canal is being expanded! Less waiting time to get through the trench! The two existing parallel canals will soon have an agjacent third, wider waterway, construction for which is already under way. It will sport doors which will be drawn at a right angle into the wall beside the canal, rather than two swing-away gates. Said to be more efficient with the use of water from Gatun Lake, it will still max out the capacity of that man made reservoir to supply water for lock operation. See more on this on Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panama_Canal_expansion_project. |
